Gregory’s wrist comp beeped, which was odd as it was the middle of physics class. He glanced down:
Exo Bureau: Please screeny {link}
He forwarded the snip to his teacher, who nodded at him and he went outside. He walked a few feet away from the door and hit the link. His screens opened to opaque and quiet. What was this? Then they resolved into an image of an older ska-i. “Hello, Gregory. My name is Lydia, and I am from the exo bureau,” she said, her kiss off screen.
Gregory mouthed a kiss, trying for ‘under authority”, which she probably couldn’t see either.
“Gregory, I’m calling you because you have been put on hold by the en-drek bureau. The en-kesh that matched you is an immigrant…”
Gregory lost the next few seconds. An en-kesh! Not some old…
“I’m sorry, ma’am, what did you say?”
She grinned at him. “I said we need your approval to make this match. She is an exo, so will not only need very careful handling, but you will need to agree to daily reports, and occasional face to face meetings.”
“Umm, Ok.”
“Your Ska-drek has already approved, but we will need your approval as well. I will snip it to you. Think it over carefully, but try to respond tonight. I’m sure she is eager to hear.”
“Yes, Ska,” he said, and the screeny died.
Approval needed
En-kesh match
Requirments: Daily Code, Custom, and Health reports, Occasional face to face meetings
How annoying! Not even a name or a date or anything. But… an en-e-kesh match! To fool around and get used to each other for six months under the eye of the ska-drek and ska-drek-a… he hit ‘approved’ before he could change his mind and went back into class.
He didn’t go back to his seat but stood at the door until the teacher noticed. “Yes, Gregory?”
“En-e-kesh Gregory Xoff,” he said, and the room burst out in cheers.
Thank you for reading Von’s Substack. I would love it if you commented! I love hearing from readers, especially critical comments. I would love to start more letter exchanges, so if there’s a subject you’re interested in, get writing and tag me!
Being ‘restacked’ and mentioned in ‘notes’ is very important for lesser-known stacks so… feel free! I’m semi-retired and write as a ministry (and for fun) so you don’t need to feel guilty you aren’t paying for anything, but if you enjoy my writing (even if you dramatically disagree with it), then restack, please! Or mention me in one of your own posts.
If I don’t write you back it is almost certain that I didn’t see it, so please feel free to comment and link to your post. Or if you just think I would be interested in your post!
If you get lost, check out my ‘Table of Contents’ which I try to keep up to date.
Von also writes as ‘Arthur Yeomans’. Under that name he writes children’s, YA, and adult fiction from a Christian perspective. His books include:
