What a charming comedy-of-errors. The way you handle the "blouse vs. no blouse" misunderstanding is brilliant. It tells the reader so much about the social stratification and the kindness of the family without a single line of dry exposition. Nice one. I’ve been liking quite a few of your posts and restacks, so let me introduce myself. I’m an English teacher from Cheltenham. I read an enormous about of sf and write a bit too. Here’s what I think is my best story so far (opinions vary): https://open.substack.com/pub/nickjtaylor/p/china-blues?r=5bbgb5&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
And any time you would like to exchange critiques/beta reads etc I'm game. I’ll check out your story when I get time. I’m a former missionary and linguist and teacher from the US who has lived in Africa, Europe, etc. So I like to get the cross cultural stuff into my stories, as well as a lot of important moral issues. Moral courage is my favourite character trait.
