It was odd, but no one in the house had yet, officially, learned of the kidnapping of Seth before today. So Hadassah, in a twist of irony, learned of the kidnapping from the same envoy that brought them word that her betrothal was official and that her Father and King Caleb’s representatives had agreed upon the terms. Her feelings were in turmoil.
She stood looking out the window. She was betrothed--to her family’s greatest enemy. In spite of what her Father, her Aunt, and even her Cousin had said to her, she still couldn’t reconcile herself to that. Obviously, her duty required that she marry that lad. But it was duty, not desire, not even the desire that would normally come from being obedient and advancing the family’s interests. But then she learned he was missing, presumed kidnapped, though no note had been received. The emotion that had hit her then was a shock to her. Grief--grief over a Husband she did not want who was missing. Where she should have felt joy, she felt grief.
