Folk tales form the bedrock of cultures. They not only teach good and evil, and write and wrong, but they teach ‘how we do things’, as opposed to others. We need to be telling each other… Tales.

I have just read this post, and I think it gets at some of the same thing, only for a small family, not an entire culture.
