Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever.
Jeremiah 35:18-19
Many modern preachers and theologians, when reading the text of Jeremiah 35, seem to think that this text is an aberration which must be explained away. The words are barely out of their mouths before they are expounding exceptions, qualifications, and changing the words.
But the story of Jonadab is not without context. From the beginning of Scripture to the end the concept of obedience to the father is taught, and taught extensively.
Honour your Father and Mother
The old commentators who comment on Jeremiah 35 consistently harken back to the Ten Commandments, in particular “Honour the father”.
Ten commandments
Exo 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
Deu 5:16 Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

The command to ‘honour thy father’ is accompanied, in the law, by case laws that help define and amplify it:

And the damsel's father shall say unto the elders, I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hateth her;
And, lo, he hath given occasions of speech against her, saying, I found not thy daughter a maid; and yet these are the tokens of my daughter's virginity. And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.

Lev 18:7-8 The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
The nakedness of thy father's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.
Lev 20:11 And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
Deu 22:30 A man shall not take his father's wife, nor discover his father's skirt.

Respect Father and Mother
Num 12:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut out from the camp seven days, and after that let her be received in again.
Deu 27:16 Cursed be he that setteth light by his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.
Common Honour
There are many other passages that speak of the general honour that children owe to their parents.
Deu 21:13 And she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in thine house, and bewail her father and her mother a full month: and after that thou shalt go in unto her, and be her husband, and she shall be thy wife.
Num 27:4 Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.
Lev 21:11 Neither shall he go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father, or for his mother;
Lev 22:13 But if the priest's daughter be a widow, or divorced, and have no child, and is returned unto her father's house, as in her youth, she shall eat of her father's meat: but there shall no stranger eat thereof.
Num 6:7 He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die: because the consecration of his God is upon his head.

And the concept of Honour your Father is not set aside in the New Testament. If anything it is elevated.

Jesus honour includes care
We need to notice that in the time that Jesus rebuked the pharisees his example He used an example of their relationship with their elder parents.

Jesus with His Father
Jesus was the prime example of the relationship of a son with His Father.
Mat 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

Examples
The Old Testament has several examples of children and fathers that fall outside of modern sensibilities in the way that fathers given commands, and sons obey. (Or disobey and are punished for it.)
Judah and Onan
Gen 38:8-10 And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.
And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also.

The modern American reader tends to see the word ‘house’ as meaning ‘building where I live with my wife and underage children’.
Abraham
Gen 18:17-19 And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

Disobedient to Parents
Have you ever noticed how, right in the middle of two of the New Testament lists of horrible sins, there is ‘disobedient to parents’? Not in the beginning… right in the middle.
Rom 1:29-32 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things,
disobedient to parents,
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
2Ti 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers,
disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
Moses and his father in law

Book of Proverbs: the whole thing
It is often missed, but the entire book of Proverbs concern the law, commandments, instruction, doctrine… of the father, to his grown son! When modern Americans here ‘commands of the father’ we picture a little twelve year old boy standing, eyes wide, listening to his father. But when we read what the father says, he is NOT talking about a little boy! He is talking to someone called to be a ruler, someone who is married and needs to avoid adultery, someone who is managing his business and house!

Pro 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
Pro 3:1-2 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Pro 4:1-4 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

Conclusion
This has been a rather lengthy post. With very little words from me and a lot of Scripture. But I hope that I have shown that the Scriptures teach, from beginning to end, that we are to honour our fathers and mothers. And that honouring includes obedience. And that obedience doesn’t end with our minority.
