Shakespeare
Why am I posting this? Shakespeare is obviously not the Scripture, nor even a Biblical commentator. I am posting it as an example of how the meaning of the word ‘lord’ and the view of the relationship between wife and husband have changed over the years.
Fie, fie! unknit that threatening unkind brow,
And dart not scornful glances from those eyes
To wound thy lord, thy king, thy governor.
It blots thy beauty as frosts do bite the meads,
Confounds thy fame as whirlwinds shake fair buds,
And in no sense is meet or amiable.
A woman mov'd is like a fountain troubled-
Muddy, ill-seeming, thick, bereft of beauty;
And while it is so, none so dry or thirsty
Will deign to sip or touch one drop of it.
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign; one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labour both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe;
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks, and true obedience-
Too little payment for so great a debt.
Such duty as the subject owes the prince,
Even such a woman oweth to her husband;
And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?
I am asham'd that women are so simple
To offer war where they should kneel for peace;
Or seek for rule, supremacy, and sway,
When they are bound to serve, love, and obey.
Why are our bodies soft and weak and smooth,
Unapt to toil and trouble in the world,
But that our soft conditions and our hearts
Should well agree with our external parts?
Come, come, you forward and unable worms!
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown;
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband's foot;
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready, may it do him ease.

Luk 8:25 And G1161 he said G2036 unto them, G846 Where G4226 is G2076 your G5216 faith? G4102 And G1161 they being afraid G5399 wondered, G2296 saying G3004 one to another, G240 G4314 What manner of man G5101 ( G686 ) is G2076 this! G3778 for G3754 he commandeth G2004 even G2532 the G3588 winds G417 and G2532 water, G5204 and G2532 they obey G5219 him. G846
Luk 8:35 Then G1161 they went out G1831 to see G1492 what was done; G1096 and G2532 came G2064 to G4314 Jesus, G2424 and G2532 found G2147 the G3588 man, G444 out of G575 whom G3739 the G3588 devils G1140 were departed, G1831 sitting G2521 at G3844 the G3588 feet G4228 of Jesus, G2424 clothed, G2439 and G2532 in his right mind: G4993 and G2532 they were afraid. G5399
Luk 8:50 But G1161 when Jesus G2424 heard G191 it, he answered G611 him, G846 saying, G3004 Fear G5399 not: G3361 believe G4100 only, G3440 and G2532 she shall be made whole. G4982
Luk 9:34 While( G1161 ) he G846 thus G5023 spake, G3004 there came G1096 a cloud, G3507 and G2532 overshadowed G1982 them: G846 and G1161 they feared G5399 as they G1565 entered G1525 into G1519 the G3588 cloud. G3507
Luk 9:45 But G1161 they G3588 understood not G50 this G5124 saying, G4487 and G2532 it was G2258 hid G3871 from G575 them, G846 that G2443 they perceived G143 it G846 not: G3361 and G2532 they feared G5399 to ask G2065 him G846 of G4012 that G5127 saying. G4487
Luk 12:4 And G1161 I say G3004 unto you G5213 my G3450 friends, G5384 Be not afraid G5399 G3361 of G575 them that kill G615 the G3588 body, G4983 and G2532 after G3326 that G5023 have G2192 no G3361 more G5100 G4055 that they can do. G4160
Luk 12:5 But G1161 I will forewarn G5263 you G5213 whom G5101 ye shall fear: G5399 Fear G5399 him, which after he hath killed G615 hath G2192 power G1849 to cast G1685 into G1519 hell; G1067 yea, G3483 I say G3004 unto you, G5213 Fear G5399 him. G5126
Luk 12:7 But G235 even G2532 the G3588 very hairs G2359 of your G5216 head G2776 are all G3956 numbered. G705 Fear G5399 not G3361 therefore: G3767 ye are of more value G1308 than many G4183 sparrows. G4765
Luk 12:32 Fear G5399 not, G3361 little G3398 flock; G4168 for G3754 it is your Father's good pleasure G2106 G5216 G3962 to give G1325 you G5213 the G3588 kingdom. G932
Luk 18:2 Saying, G3004 There was G2258 in G1722 a( G5100 ) city G4172 a( G5100 ) judge, G2923 which feared G5399 not G3361 God, G2316 neither G2532 G3361 regarded G1788 man: G444
Luk 18:4 And G2532 he would G2309 not G3756 for a while: G1909 G5550 but G1161 afterward G3326 G5023 he said G2036 within G1722 himself, G1438 Though G1499 I fear G5399 not G3756 God, G2316 nor G2532 G3756 regard G1788 man; G444
Luk 19:21 For G1063 I feared G5399 thee, G4571 because G3754 thou art G1488 an austere G840 man: G444 thou takest up G142 that G3739 thou layedst not down, G5087 G3756 and G2532 reapest G2325 that G3739 thou didst not G3756 sow. G4687
Luk 20:19 And G2532 the G3588 chief priests G749 and G2532 the G3588 scribes G1122 the same G846 hour G5610 sought G2212 to lay G1911 hands G5495 on G1909 him; G846 and G2532 they feared G5399 the G3588 people: G2992 for G1063 they perceived G1097 that G3754 he had spoken G2036 this G5026 parable G3850 against G4314 them. G846
Luk 22:2 And G2532 the G3588 chief priests G749 and G2532 scribes G1122 sought G2212 how G4459 they might kill G337 him; G846 for G1063 they feared G5399 the G3588 people. G2992
Luk 23:40 But G1161 the G3588 other G2087 answering G611 rebuked G2008 him, G846 saying, G3004 Dost not G3761 thou G4771 fear G5399 God, G2316 seeing( G3754 ) thou art G1488 in G1722 the G3588 same G846 condemnation? G2917
Jhn 6:19 So G3767 when they had rowed G1643 about G5613 five and twenty G4002 G1501 or G2228 thirty G5144 furlongs, G4712 they see G2334 Jesus G2424 walking G4043 on G1909 the G3588 sea, G2281 and G2532 drawing G1096 nigh G1451 unto the G3588 ship: G4143 and G2532 they were afraid. G5399
Jhn 6:20 But G1161 he G3588 saith G3004 unto them, G846 It is G1510 I; G1473 be not afraid. G5399 G3361
Jhn 9:22 These G5023 words spake G2036 his G846 parents, G1118 because G3754 they feared G5399 the G3588 Jews: G2453 for G1063 the G3588 Jews G2453 had agreed G4934 already, G2235 that G2443 if G1437 any man G5100 did confess G3670 that he G846 was Christ, G5547 he should be G1096 put out of the synagogue. G656
Jhn 12:15 Fear G5399 not, G3361 daughter G2364 of Sion: G4622 behold, G2400 thy G4675 King G935 cometh, G2064 sitting G2521 on G1909 an ass's G3688 colt. G4454
Jhn 19:8 When G3753 Pilate G4091 therefore G3767 heard G191 that G5126 saying, G3056 he was the more afraid; G5399 G3123
Act 5:26 Then G5119 went G565 the G3588 captain G4755 with G4862 the G3588 officers, G5257 and brought G71 them G846 without G3326 G3756 violence: G970 for G1063 they feared G5399 the G3588 people, G2992 lest G3363 they should have been stoned. G3034
Act 9:26 And G1161 when Saul G4569 was come G3854 to G1519 Jerusalem, G2419 he assayed G3987 to join himself G2853 to the G3588 disciples: G3101 but G2532 they were all afraid G5399 G3956 of him, G846 and believed G4100 not G3361 that G3754 he was G2076 a disciple. G3101
Act 10:2 A devout G2152 man, and G2532 one that feared G5399 God G2316 with G4862 all G3956 his G848 house, G3624 which( G5037 ) gave G4160 much G4183 alms G1654 to the G3588 people, G2992 and G2532 prayed G1189 to God G2316 alway. G1275
Act 10:22 And G1161 they G3588 said, G2036 Cornelius G2883 the centurion, G1543 a just G1342 man, G435 and G2532 one that feareth G5399 God, G2316 and G5037 of good report G3140 among G5259 all G3650 the G3588 nation G1484 of the G3588 Jews, G2453 was warned from God G5537 by G5259 an holy G40 angel G32 to send for G3343 thee G4571 into G1519 his G848 house, G3624 and G2532 to hear G191 words G4487 of G3844 thee. G4675
Act 10:35 But G235 in G1722 every G3956 nation G1484 he that feareth G5399 him, G846 and G2532 worketh G2038 righteousness, G1343 is G2076 accepted G1184 with him. G846
Act 13:16 Then G1161 Paul G3972 stood up, G450 and G2532 beckoning G2678 with his hand G5495 said, G2036 Men G435 of Israel, G2475 and G2532 ye that fear G5399 God, G2316 give audience. G191
Act 13:26 Men G435 and brethren, G80 children G5207 of the stock G1085 of Abraham, G11 and G2532 whosoever among G1722 you G5213 feareth G5399 God, G2316 to you G5213 is the G3588 word G3056 of this G5026 salvation G4991 sent. G649
Act 16:38 And G1161 the G3588 serjeants G4465 told G312 these G5023 words G4487 unto the G3588 magistrates: G4755 and G2532 they feared, G5399 when they heard G191 that G3754 they were G1526 Romans. G4514
Act 18:9 Then G1161 spake G2036 the G3588 Lord G2962 to Paul G3972 in G1722 the night G3571 by G1223 a vision, G3705 Be not afraid, G5399 G3361 but G235 speak, G2980 and G2532 hold not thy peace: G4623 G3361
Act 22:29 Then G3767 straightway G2112 they departed G868 from G575 him G846 which should G3195 have examined G426 him: G846 and G2532 the G3588 chief captain G5506 also G1161 was afraid, G5399 after he knew G1921 that G3754 he was G2076 a Roman, G4514 and G2532 because G3754 he had G2258 bound G1210 him. G846
Act 27:17 Which G3739 when they had taken up, G142 they used G5530 helps, G996 undergirding G5269 the G3588 ship; G4143 and, G5037 fearing G5399 lest G3361 they should fall G1601 into G1519 the G3588 quicksands, G4950 strake sail, G5465 G4632 and so G3779 were driven. G5342
Act 27:24 Saying, G3004 Fear G5399 not, G3361 Paul; G3972 thou G4571 must G1163 be brought before G3936 Caesar: G2541 and, G2532 lo, G2400 God G2316 hath given G5483 thee G4671 all G3956 them that sail G4126 with G3326 thee. G4675
Act 27:29 Then G5037 fearing G5399 lest G3381 we should have fallen G1601 upon G1519 rocks, G5138 G5117 they cast G4496 four G5064 anchors G45 out G1537 of the stern, G4403 and wished G2172 for the day. G2250 ( G1096 )
Rom 11:20 Well; G2573 because of unbelief G570 they were broken off, G1575 and G1161 thou G4771 standest G2476 by faith. G4102 Be not highminded, G5309 G3361 but G235 fear: G5399
Rom 13:3 For G1063 rulers G758 are G1526 not G3756 a terror G5401 to good G18 works, G2041 but G235 to the G3588 evil. G2556 Wilt G2309 thou then G1161 not G3361 be afraid G5399 of the G3588 power? G1849 do G4160 that which is good, G18 and G2532 thou shalt have G2192 praise G1868 of G1537 the same: G846
Rom 13:4 For G1063 he is G2076 the minister G1249 of God G2316 to thee G4671 for G1519 good. G18 But G1161 if G1437 thou do G4160 that which is evil, G2556 be afraid; G5399 for G1063 he beareth G5409 not G3756 the G3588 sword G3162 in vain: G1500 for G1063 he is G2076 the minister G1249 of God, G2316 a revenger G1558 to G1519 execute wrath G3709 upon him that doeth G4238 evil. G2556
2Co 11:3 But G1161 I fear, G5399 lest by any means, G3381 as G5613 the G3588 serpent G3789 beguiled G1818 Eve G2096 through G1722 his G848 subtilty, G3834 so G3779 your G5216 minds G3540 should be corrupted G5351 from G575 the G3588 simplicity G572 that G3588 is in G1519 Christ. G5547
2Co 12:20 For G1063 I fear, G5399 lest, G3381 when I come, G2064 I shall not G3756 find G2147 you G5209 such G3634 as I would, G2309 and that I G2504 shall be found G2147 unto you G5213 such as G3634 ye would G2309 not: G3756 lest G3381 there be debates, G2054 envyings, G2205 wraths, G2372 strifes, G2052 backbitings, G2636 whisperings, G5587 swellings, G5450 tumults: G181
Gal 2:12 For G1063 before that certain G5100 came G2064 from G575 James, G2385 he did eat G4906 with G3326 the G3588 Gentiles: G1484 but G1161 when G3753 they were come, G2064 he withdrew G5288 and G2532 separated G873 himself, G1438 fearing G5399 them G3588 which were of G1537 the circumcision. G4061
Gal 4:11 I am afraid G5399 of you, G5209 lest G3381 I have bestowed upon you labour G2872 G1519 G5209 in vain. G1500
Eph 5:33 Nevertheless G4133 let every one G1538 of you G5210 ( G2532 ) in particular G2596 G1520 so G3779 love G25 his G1438 wife G1135 even as G5613 himself; G1438 and G1161 the G3588 wife G1135 see that G2443 she reverence G5399 her husband. G435
Col 3:22 Servants, G1401 obey G5219 in G2596 all things G3956 your masters G2962 according G2596 to the flesh; G4561 not G3361 with G1722 eyeservice, G3787 as G5613 menpleasers; G441 but G235 in G1722 singleness G572 of heart, G2588 fearing G5399 God: G2316
Heb 4:1 Let us therefore G3767 fear, G5399 lest, G3379 a promise G1860 being left G2641 us of entering G1525 into G1519 his G846 rest, G2663 any G5100 of G1537 you G5216 should seem G1380 to come short G5302 of it.
Heb 11:23 By faith G4102 Moses, G3475 when he was born, G1080 was hid G2928 three months G5150 of G5259 his G848 parents, G3962 because G1360 they saw G1492 he was a proper G791 child; G3813 and G2532 they were not afraid G5399 G3756 of the G3588 king's G935 commandment. G1297
Heb 11:27 By faith G4102 he forsook G2641 Egypt, G125 not G3361 fearing G5399 the G3588 wrath G2372 of the G3588 king: G935 for G1063 he endured, G2594 as G5613 seeing G3708 him who is invisible. G517
Heb 13:6 So that G5620 we G2248 may boldly G2292 say, G3004 The Lord G2962 is my G1698 helper, G998 and G2532 I will not G3756 fear G5399 what G5101 man G444 shall do G4160 unto me. G3427
1Pe 2:17 Honour G5091 all G3956 men. Love G25 the G3588 brotherhood. G81 Fear G5399 God. G2316 Honour G5091 the G3588 king. G935
1Pe 3:6 Even as G5613 Sara G4564 obeyed G5219 Abraham, G11 calling G2564 him G846 lord: G2962 whose G3739 daughters G5043 ye are, G1096 as long as ye do well, G15 and G2532 are not afraid G5399 G3361 with any G3367 amazement. G4423
1Pe 3:14 But G235 and G2532 if G1487 ye suffer G3958 for righteousness' sake, G1223 G1343 happy G3107 are ye: and G1161 be not afraid G5399 G3361 of their G846 terror, G5401 neither G3366 be troubled; G5015
1Jn 4:18 There is G2076 no G3756 fear G5401 in G1722 love; G26 but G235 perfect G5046 love G26 casteth G906 out G1854 fear: G5401 because G3754 fear G5401 hath G2192 torment. G2851 ( G1161 ) He that feareth G5399 is not G3756 made perfect G5048 in G1722 love. G26
Rev 1:17 And G2532 when G3753 I saw G1492 him, G846 I fell G4098 at G4314 his G848 feet G4228 as G5613 dead. G3498 And G2532 he laid G2007 his G848 right G1188 hand G5495 upon G1909 me, G1691 saying G3004 unto me, G3427 Fear G5399 not; G3361 I G1473 am G1510 the G3588 first G4413 and G2532 the G3588 last: G2078
Rev 2:10 Fear G5399 none G3367 of those things which G3739 thou shalt G3195 suffer: G3958 behold, G2400 the G3588 devil G1228 shall G3195 cast G906 some of G1537 you G5216 into G1519 prison, G5438 that G2443 ye may be tried; G3985 and G2532 ye shall have G2192 tribulation G2347 ten G1176 days: G2250 be G1096 thou faithful G4103 unto G891 death, G2288 and G2532 I will give G1325 thee G4671 a crown G4735 of life. G2222
Rev 11:18 And G2532 the G3588 nations G1484 were angry, G3710 and G2532 thy G4675 wrath G3709 is come, G2064 and G2532 the G3588 time G2540 of the G3588 dead, G3498 that they should be judged, G2919 and G2532 that thou shouldest give G1325 reward G3408 unto thy G4675 servants G1401 the G3588 prophets, G4396 and G2532 to the G3588 saints, G40 and G2532 them that fear G5399 thy G4675 name, G3686 small G3398 and G2532 great; G3173 and G2532 shouldest destroy G1311 them which destroy G1311 the G3588 earth. G1093
Rev 14:7 Saying G3004 with G1722 a loud G3173 voice, G5456 Fear G5399 God, G2316 and G2532 give G1325 glory G1391 to him; G846 for G3754 the G3588 hour G5610 of his G848 judgment G2920 is come: G2064 and G2532 worship G4352 him that made G4160 heaven, G3772 and G2532 earth, G1093 and G2532 the G3588 sea, G2281 and G2532 the fountains G4077 of waters. G5204
Rev 15:4 Who G5101 shall not G3364 fear G5399 thee, G4571 O Lord, G2962 and G2532 glorify G1392 thy G4675 name? G3686 for G3754 thou only G3441 art holy: G3741 for G3754 all G3956 nations G1484 shall come G2240 and G2532 worship G4352 before G1799 thee; G4675 for G3754 thy G4675 judgments G1345 are made manifest. G5319
Rev 19:5 And G2532 a voice G5456 came G1831 out of G1537 the G3588 throne, G2362 saying, G3004 Praise G134 our G2257 God, G2316 all G3956 ye his G848 servants, G1401 and G2532 ye that fear G5399 him, G846 both G2532 small G3398 and G2532 great. G3173 Replace with Trust

Eph 5:22 Wives, trust your own husbands, as unto the Lord.
Eph 5:24 Therefore as the church trusts Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.
Col 3:18 Wives, trust your own husbands, as it is fit in G the Lord.
Tit 2:5 To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, trusting their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
1Pe 3:1 Likewise, ye wives, trust your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives;
1Pe 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, trusting unto their own husbands:
1Pe 3:6 Even as Sara trusted Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
1Ti 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with [complete] trust.

1Pe 3:5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, honoured their own husbands:
1Pe 3:6 Even as Sara honoured Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement.
1Ti 2:11 Let the woman learn in silence with all honour.
