Some very good ideas.

I try to live by them.

I saw your comment over on Morgthorak's substack and I agree with it wholeheartedly. (I found this article there.) As a new Substacker I am under no illusion that I'll have a ton of paid subscribers (though I did get 1 in the first 30 days!) but I love when people like or comment or restack... Honestly, that feels pretty good.

How exactly would a table of contents work? Where would you put it?

OK, so just an extra "section" at the top with a tab. Excellent idea. thanks. So, you create "pages" for each category, and include links? Is there a tutorial page or Substack article on this I can look at for the technical end?

Nobody taught me how to do this, just worked it out myself. If you use heading styles, they are linkable. Feel free to ask me as you work on it, though.

OK, I'm quite keen. I'll fiddle about with it until I figure it out. Such a good idea.

OK, I got it mostly done but can't figure out how to create these linked headline things at the top.

OK, you need to go to each of the headers like Byzantium or whatever, and you need to format them as style heading one or if you prefer you can do style heading two or three or whatever, but I would suggest style heading one.

Once you do that, and you publish it, I would not suggest sending it to everybody, but once you do that and you publish it, just yourself all secretly, then when you go to that post, you’ll find that if you hover right to the left of the heading they’ll be a little mark I forgot what it looks like I think it’s like a chain or something if you click on it it will say copy link. That will be the link to that part of your post.

Yeah, it doesn't work. I open the page and the headers are live. I click it and it tells me the link is copied. Then go back to the editing window and highlight the header, enter the link and save. But when I go back to the page the link doesn't take me to the section, but just to the next header on the list.
