Housekeeping 8-23
Getting things organised
1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
So given all that I have posted, and all that I am going to post, and all of the various people I am responding to, and because I am practically lost myself :) … I thought I would make a ‘housekeeping’ kind of post. Or article. Or whatever we call these.
Sections
So when I first got going on Substack I read an article on ‘Sections’, and I dutifully divided my writing up into ‘Sections’. Problem is I have no idea how or if it is working. I haven’t seen or dealt with Sections in anyone else’s writing, so I have no idea if it is a good idea, a bad idea, a neutral idea or what.
I currently have the following Sections, and I would love to have people comment on how they are working for them. Can you see them all? Do you like it that you can’t see some of them???
Von’s Substack:
I put a lot of stuff here. Basically stuff that doesn’t fit anywhere else. I’m currently engaged in several letter exchanges, including one on evolution, one on marriage, and one that isn’t seeming to go anywhere on gun control.
IllAdvised Opinions:
Looking at the law from a layman and theonomic perspective. I use definitions of words from the Webster’s 1828 not the Wikipedia. The foundation for the series is the post ‘It’s not a game’.
The Oracle:
A fun fiction story, kind of an ‘Aesop’s Fables’ kind of thing which all revolve around an oracle and each have a moral. You can start with the Prologue, where we get introduced to the Oracle.
Island People:
I published, and then withdrew, several books in this series, and I am going to try them on Substack. I haven’t gone live with them yet, but coming very soon.
Language Learning:
I love language learning, and love talking about it, and have written a couple posts on the subject because why not. I hope to expand on the issue of language learning principles when I have the creative energy and people seem interested.
Homeschooling Etc.:
Articles on homeschooling and against government schooling. I’ve only got one post there so far, but it was a fun one called ‘three bags of marbles’.
Subjects
I like to write about lots of different subjects, but the common themes might be getting at the root of issues, especially from a Christian and Theonomic perspective. For example in my marriage discussion, we settled on the question ‘What is Marriage?’… getting at the root of the issue.
Letters and Comments
The funnest thing I have found so far to do on Substack are ‘letter exchanges’. This involves my writing a post about a subject, to which someone else responds, and to which I respond back, etc. I have several people involved right now but I would love to get more people sending letters back and forth with me.
So far I’ve started two exchanges on marriage (with Andrew and Ryan), two exchanges on evolution (with Creation Reformation and Don Pato’s Musings ), and one abortive exchange on gun control.
Similarly if not as much, I like long, well thought out, comments. Especially ones that disagree intelligently.
Pictures
I love grabbing images from Wikipedia Commons and slapping a Bible verse on them and sticking them in the middle of my posts. I try to make them relevant, too, and fitting the themes of my posting. But mostly I just love popping pictures.
But I would super love comments on the pictures… how they worked with the post, if you found them funny or poignant or whatever people do find pictures.
Ground Rules
Here are some ground rules I try to live by, and enforce, on my Stack:
No misquoting. If someone says something and you want to respond to it, copy/paste what they said, and link to where they said it. Steelman, not strawman.
Disagree all you want, but keep it civil. No Ad Hominem, clean language, and try to put your thoughts into whole sentences which fit in whole paragraphs.
Upcoming Posts
I have several books in the Island People series that I am working on putting on. These posts should start dropping in about a week, and right now I have a three a week schedule.
The ‘What is Marriage’ series should be continuing. Andrew is up next, and I have a response to Ryan that is in process.
Don Pato and I are working on an Evolution series. I have my first response to him scheduled for August 8.
I have a dozen IllAdvised Opinions sitting on my computer in one form or another. Mostly another. Nothing scheduled yet.
I’m stuck on the next part of The Oracle but, if inspiration strikes, I could get a post out next week. Or next month…
