So, Andrew has proposed that ‘Marriage is a Dance’. Interesting metaphor, but it does seem to have wrapped up the early part of our discussion. We disagree on many aspects of marriage, which I state rather bluntly, and he dances around (pun intended) with grace. But they are there in black and white, or bits and bites in our earlier posts, and might well be again.
But our overall goal was to present our views on ‘What is Marriage’. And when thinking about it I realised that there is a part of the definition of marriage that seems rather dramatically under attack nowadays in the church and the world. I think defending marriage as a blessing makes a good post all by itself. So here it is: Marriage is a Blessing.
Definitions have two radically different aspects. They need to include, first of all, what group this ‘thing’ is part of; then they need to include what sets this ‘thing’ apart from other ‘things’ that are also in that group. When I was a child, there was some game that began with the question ‘animal, vegetable or mineral’. Now, I don’t remember the rest of the game, but you get the point. We were obviously trying to guess some ‘thing’, and the ‘thing’ wasn’t an abstract ‘thing’, like ‘justice’ or ‘the American way’, but was a concrete ‘thing’. And we assumed that among concrete things, there were three classes: animal, vegetable, and mineral.
Then, the rest of the game consisted (I am sure) of trying to figure out what separated this ‘thing’ from all other things in the same class. Indeed, there might have been a variety of sub-classes involved: not just an animal but a mammal, not just a mammal but a mammal with four legs, etc.
So when I say that today’s post is ‘Marriage is a Blessing’, I am not, in the slightest, saying that the state of being a blessing sets marriage apart from every other blessing. It is a large class, and marriage is but one member of the group.
But I am saying that marriage is NOT a member of the class ‘neutral things’. Or the class ‘things we can take or leave equally’. Or, worse, ‘bad things’. Marriage is a good thing, a blessing, and it was designed that way.
I am also shamelessly using this post as a vehicle to, once again, post in a whole lot of Scripture and pictures of women, children, and husbands. Often both at once. Sue me.
So I had a format for this post in mind, but when I started working on it it changed utterly. Instead of the sort of topic-by-topic format, I had thought of, I am instead going to post the results of what happened when I searched on the words ‘blessed’ and ‘blessing’ and ‘bless’ in Scripture, the ones that had something to do with marriage, and organised them together.
The first thing you will probably notice is that while a wife is seen as a blessing, as is a husband, the feature of marriage that God lists by far the most frequently is the blessing of children, a blessing which comes from a Godly marriage. And I list here only those where the word ‘bless’ in some form is literally in the text, not the dozens of other places where it is implied or stated with different words.

And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses. He had also seven sons and three daughters. And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.
The man who fears the Lord
Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.
A Song of degrees. Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways.

The virtuous woman
Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
Pro 31:10-31

Conclusion
Marriage is a member of the group of things ‘blessings from the LORD’. Although it's not included in the short definition, it's crucial to remember. It is a blessing not only to the individuals involved but also to the church and the world. Being unmarried is the very first thing that God said wasn’t good.
For this series of posts, I have been using the definition:
Marriage is a permanent covenant to exclusive sexual[3] union between a man[1] and a woman[2] that has been and is being consummated. It was ordained by God for the purpose of producing a Godly seed, in order that man should take dominion; to which end the woman is his helpmeet, and their children are arrows.
And here we add, ‘A blessing of God’. Indeed, a blessing of God upon the individuals involved, the couple involved, their children, their family, their church, their nation, and the world and all that is in it. Thus:
Marriage is a permanent covenant to exclusive sexual[3] union between a man[1] and a woman[2] that has been and is being consummated. It was ordained by God for the purpose of producing a Godly seed, in order that man should take dominion; to which end the woman is his helpmeet, and their children are arrows. It is a blessing of God upon the individuals involved, the couple involved, their children, their family, their church, their nation, and the world and all that is in it.
Our world has been attacking marriage from the right and the left, from the church, the state, and the world. Our job as Christians, along with anyone with any sanity left, must be to not only defend marriage but promote it. To not only idealise marriage but to participate in it. We need to realise, recognise, and act on the truth that… marriage is a blessing.
