“What?” said Mehetabel, staring at the Vissermeisje.
//I get to sleep with you, you two// the girl responded, in Taal. //And we need to talk our talk. It was your Husband’s idea.//
Mehetabel was waiting for her Husband to return from a meeting. She had heard the idea, that they were to learn Taal, and change. And though it didn’t thrill her, she understood. But what was this?
//Oh, good, you’re here. What’s your name?// Ishvi asked, coming in the cabin and stripping off his shirt.
//Emma, sir// the Meisje said, and, undressing, got in their bed, laying with her head at the far end from the pillows. //I hope the hammocks will be ready soon, this is going to be uncomfortable.//
//Ishvi?// Mehetabel said, as he finished undressing.
//We have to live like them in order to change. Hurry up, get undressed,// he said as he motioned for her to follow his example.
It was a long five days, and a longer five nights. And Hadassah caught on halfway through the second day, when she walked in on a couple of lasses discussing the change (complaining, actually). But Seth managed to at least pretend to be surprised when, on the morning of the sixth day of the voyage, every single Hostage family, most of the other Farmers, and even three of the Ellyll came up on deck as Visser.
The Visser promptly held a feast and then descended en masse down to the lower decks, where the cabins were torn apart, and almost the entire deck (with exceptions only for some of the Ellyll and all of the Dwarves) was turned into one large cabin, with hammocks everywhere.
And Emma slept with them for the rest of the voyage, and she and Mehetabel ended up fast friends.
Thank you for reading Von’s Substack. I would love it if you commented! I love hearing from readers, especially critical comments. I would love to start more letter exchanges, so if there’s a subject you’re interested in, get writing and tag me!
Being ‘restacked’ and mentioned in ‘notes’ is very important for lesser-known stacks so… feel free! I’m semi-retired and write as a ministry (and for fun) so you don’t need to feel guilty you aren’t paying for anything, but if you enjoy my writing (even if you dramatically disagree with it), then restack, please! Or mention me in one of your own posts.
If I don’t write you back it is almost certain that I didn’t see it, so please feel free to comment and link to your post. Or if you just think I would be interested in your post!
If you get lost, check out my ‘Table of Contents’ which I try to keep up to date.
Thanks again, God Bless, Soli Deo gloria,
Von

Island People
Island People is a young adult fantasy book centring on a young prince. The book starts with his kidnapping and follows his adventures as he not only escapes from his kidnapper but gains critical allies and friends.
The entire book is scheduled on Substack, and there are several sequels. This is a book I wrote years ago, so it is in a bit of a rough form. Critiques and comments are more than welcome, they are requested.
