Perhaps my question wasn't clear. When you use the phrase 'companionship for the purpose of godly dominion' what passage in Scripture are you getting this phrase from? Off the cuff I don't remember that exact phrase in Scripture.
Well, that gets at the 'wife, and compantion, and covenant parts. But you leave off:
Mal 2:15 And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
Which would get at the 'permanent' and 'godly seed' parts of the definition.
In my marriage series I use the following definition:
Marriage is a permanent covenant to exclusive sexual union between a man and a woman that has been and is being consummated. It was ordained by God for the purpose of producing a Godly seed, in order that man should take dominion; to which end the woman is his helpmeet, and their children are arrows.
This definition starts at Genesis 2, obviously... and moves into other passages.
That will preach. Marriage, like all of life, is greater than the sum of the parts but is not less than the parts. To diminish one is to diminish what God intended marriage to be. To make it all spiritual is to lose more than half and to make it all physical is to lose more than half. Somehow I suspect our divorce from farm life has greatly reduced our understanding of and appreciation for the physical.
Suggestion: I much appreciate the KJV but it is impenetrable to many people.
