Jellia came running in the door. It was just past four o’clock and she was eager to use her new pasta noodle machine. “Mother, Ska-drek, did a package come for me?”
“It certainly did, Ska-drek said, from the hobby room. “Several of them. They are on the table in here.”
“What is it?” Mother said, coming out of the hobby room just as Jellia darted in.
“Oh, all sorts of things,” Jellia said. “I’ll show you all my skirts and things later but I want to get my machine unpacked… oh… here it is.”
“But what is it?” Mother asked, again, as Jellia grabbed the machine and started lugging it to the kitchen.
“It’s a pasta noodle machine,” Jellia said, struggling under the weight. “You remember the other day in the park?”
“I don’t think you should be making such big purchases…”
“It is very much her jurisdiction, My Dear,” Ska-drek said. “You will recall I have given her the responsibility for dinner. And breakfast, but ‘pasta noodles’ don’t sound like a breakfast dish?”
“I don’t think so, but I’m not sure,” Jellia said, frantically opening the package. “Oh, oh, oh, isn’t it wonderful?”
Mother didn’t seem to think so but Ska-drek came over and examined it as she frantically got some crumbly sausage out of the status box… where of course they had put it instead of the hobby room… and started it frying. The recipe said it needed to be cooked before being put in the machine. Then she got out an onion and a couple of spicy peppers and started chopping.
“Be careful, Darling…” she heard and, out of the corner of her eye she saw Ska-drek lay a hand on Mother’s arm, who bit her lip but stopped talking.
Jellia soon had the onions frying with the sausage and frantically looked back at the recipe. Garlic. Where was the garlic? But it didn’t need to be fried so she chopped it and put it in the bowl, then got out the four other spices, chopped them, and put them in the bowl and then took the sausage and onion off the stove, put them in the bowl, mixed it around, and put it in the status box.
Thank you for reading Von’s Substack. I would love it if you commented! I love hearing from readers, especially critical comments. I would love to start more letter exchanges, so if there’s a subject you’re interested in, get writing and tag me!
Being ‘restacked’ and mentioned in ‘notes’ is very important for lesser-known stacks so… feel free! I’m semi-retired and write as a ministry (and for fun) so you don’t need to feel guilty you aren’t paying for anything, but if you enjoy my writing (even if you dramatically disagree with it), then restack, please! Or mention me in one of your own posts.
If I don’t write you back it is almost certain that I didn’t see it, so please feel free to comment and link to your post. Or if you just think I would be interested in your post!
If you get lost, check out my ‘Table of Contents’ which I try to keep up to date.
Thanks again, God Bless, Soli Deo gloria,
Von

Contract Marriage
Contract marriage is an adult dystopia examining the issues of marriage. Like 1984 and Brave New World, Contract Marriage treats the relations between the sexes as a fundamental aspect of how a society is formed and, thus, how a society can go wrong.
Unlike those dystopias, Contract Marriage isn’t all horrible all of the time. The characters for the most part have a good time and get along in their society. But the issues of sexuality, of marriage or not, monogamy or not, faithfulness or not, and gender roles… keep coming up and causing tension and conflict and joy and pain.
My desire is that my readers would be thinking along with my characters about these issues and perhaps even arrive at the same place (minus the flying cars).
