Citizen Fenstra Drendin… who was now Ska Fenstra Kiladi… sat in her great room sipping some light brew, stared out the enormous window, and sighed. Finally. She had finally arrived.
She was sitting in her pygamas in this wonderful house, staring out this wonderful window, all alone… and finally able to start her new life. Iloh was gone… thankfully. Her daughter was gone, which was also good, she had her own new life to begin, and she was alone.
She had thought for a minute about using the hobby room, or even starting work outside, but in the end she had decided to start her life here, in this marvelous great room.
She set her wristcomp to expanded view, three screens, and signed on. The initial sign on took a bit long but then the words she had so longed for arrived: Ska Fenstra Kiladi: Trade Desk: Master Trader.
Master and only trader but still the word master was what her heart longed for. All she had striven for. She had traveled here, brought her daughter here, subjected them both to these barbaric laws, bedded and submitted to her new ‘en-drek’… all to arrive at this point.
Her daughter would be fine, she assured herself. As she herself said, the other daughters here were all in the same boat, and they survived. Indeed there was an amazing number of them. Her daughter hadn’t commented on it, but the trip from the shuttle port had shown an amazing number of offspring! And so many of them outside playing, working, and often with no adult in sight! Her daughter would love that. And, truth be told, she was very responsible.
Speaking of responsible, she had her work to get to, and she opened her screen…
Two hours of rather boring catch up work later she decided to indulge herself and turned to the ‘trade offers’ screen… which had literally hundreds of entries. She played with the sort order for a few minutes and then settled on ‘new product’ on top. The very first item was a new fruit. Indeed several of the top items were fruits. She snipped her Daughter with a request to purchase some so they could try them. The fruit itself wouldn’t travel well, but they made them into various jams, jellies, and syrups, all of which were on offer and most of which, she was sure, would find a ready market on Ephemera. It was an older and richer colony and there was a good market for exotic foodstuffs.

Thank you for reading Von’s Substack. I would love it if you commented! I love hearing from readers, especially critical comments. I would love to start more letter exchanges, so if there’s a subject you’re interested in, get writing and tag me!
Being ‘restacked’ and mentioned in ‘notes’ is very important for lesser-known stacks so… feel free! I’m semi-retired and write as a ministry (and for fun) so you don’t need to feel guilty you aren’t paying for anything, but if you enjoy my writing (even if you dramatically disagree with it), then restack, please! Or mention me in one of your own posts.
If I don’t write you back it is almost certain that I didn’t see it, so please feel free to comment and link to your post. Or if you just think I would be interested in your post!
If you get lost, check out my ‘Table of Contents’ which I try to keep up to date.
Thanks again, God Bless, Soli Deo gloria,
Von

Contract Marriage
Contract marriage is an adult dystopia examining the issues of marriage. Like 1984 and Brave New World, Contract Marriage treats the relations between the sexes as a fundamental aspect of how a society is formed and, thus, how a society can go wrong.
Unlike those dystopias, Contract Marriage isn’t all horrible all of the time. The characters for the most part have a good time and get along in their society. But the issues of sexuality, of marriage or not, monogamy or not, faithfulness or not, and gender roles… keep coming up and causing tension and conflict and joy and pain.
My desire is that my readers would be thinking along with my characters about these issues and perhaps even arrive at the same place (minus the flying cars).
