Meditation Day
Jellia drug around the kitchen, barely able to figure out what to get out next.
“Tired, Daughter?” ska-drek asked.
“Bone weary,” she replied.
“Well, I was told the difference in the day can cause that.”
“And you have no meditation day!” she whined.
“I don’t recall that concept,” he said.
“Back on Ephemera… and I really do like it here but every once in a while something comes up to bite me… back there we had one day in seven with no school, no work… well, for most people… and you were supposed to sit around and read, draw, listen to music… and meditate to prepare your mind for the coming days. We even called the days by names that represented it… we had first day, which was the first day to work… second, third, etc all the way till sixth… and then meditation day. And we don’t have that here we just go on and on and on…”
He chuckled. “Well, you can nap in the afternoon, you know. It isn’t like school goes all day.”
“I did nap! I do nap! And then I can’t sleep at night so I get up and read, or take a bath, or take a bath while reading, or sneak down here and get something to eat… which you know because you caught me the other day and I was sure I was going to get physically chastised…”
“And instead you yourself remembered code and custom and realized you could have gone for a walk in the park in the middle of the night.”
“Which you offered to lend me a gun for. Anyway, I am exhausted!”
“Well, you will survive. But those eggs won’t cook unless you turn the grill on.”
“Oh, curses!”

Contract marriage is an adult dystopia examining the issues of marriage. Like 1984 and Brave New World, Contract Marriage treats the relations between the sexes as a fundamental aspect of how a society is formed and, thus, how a society can go wrong.
Unlike those dystopias, Contract Marriage isn’t all horrible all of the time. The characters for the most part have a good time and get along in their society. But the issues of sexuality, of marriage or not, monogamy or not, faithfulness or not, and gender roles… keep coming up and causing tension and conflict and joy and pain.
My desire is that my readers would be thinking along with my characters about these issues and perhaps even arrive at the same place (minus the flying cars).
