No, don’t panic, the story isn’t over. It isn’t even half over. Jellia isn’t even married yet!
But I think this is a good time to do some summarising. What is this story about? Why does it exist? What I am I trying to do??
Marriage
In case it wasn’t obvious from the title, this story is about marriage. Marriage is so important that it isn’t even mentioned in the story. Instead I present a variety of ways that a society could go around organising sex… all of them lacking in comparison to marriage.
But not what we call ‘marriage’ nowadays. What we call marriage falls far, far short from what marriage actually is. And what we actually do falls even further short.
On Ephemera, they have given up on marriage entirely. They have a series of one night stands, ensuring that everyone is constantly taken care of. On Libertas, marriage is hedged about by contracts. Limited time contracts.
Helicopter Parenting
On the planet ‘Ephemera’, where Jellia was raised, she was constantly watched over and kept from doing ‘dangerous’ things by her mother, her neighbors, and the ubiquitous ‘safeties’. On her new planet of Libertas, on the other hand, children far younger than she is are allowed to do practically everything!
School
I believe in homeschooling, but for the purposes of this story, we are comparing two school systems. And the ‘helicopter’ issue comes up again. Should students attend class if they can successfully study on their own?
Guns
Do guns make a society safer, or less safe. Guns in the hands of ordinary civilians? Societies that make a big noise about ‘safety’ tend to want to put guns only in the hand of the government, but they don’t have the best track record.
Religion
A reminder that it is literally because I think religion is so important in the area of sexual ethics that I have not put it in this book. If religion were there, then the focus of the book would have to be religion vs culture. I have chosen instead to pit culture vs culture. The contract marriage of Libertas vs the semi-organised hook-ups of Ephemera. The strong but temporary father’s of Libertas vs the absent father’s of Ephemera.

Contract Marriage
Contract marriage is an adult dystopia examining the issues of marriage. Like 1984 and Brave New World, Contract Marriage treats the relations between the sexes as a fundamental aspect of how a society is formed and, thus, how a society can go wrong.
Unlike those dystopias, Contract Marriage isn’t all horrible all of the time. The characters for the most part have a good time and get along in their society. But the issues of sexuality, of marriage or not, monogamy or not, faithfulness or not, and gender roles… keep coming up and causing tension and conflict and joy and pain.
My desire is that my readers would be thinking along with my characters about these issues and perhaps even arrive at the same place (minus the flying cars).
