Sympathy
“I’m off to the store!” she yelled, and was surprised to hear,
“Just a minute, Darling, I will come with you.”
It wasn’t much more than a minute before Ska-drek-a came downstairs and took her arm.
“Well, Mother, this is pleasant. A mother and daughter walk.”
“I’m sorry to burst your bubble, Darling, but I just had to get away from that awful man.”
“Ska-drek?”
“Yes, yes, I know you love him. And, really, it isn’t his fault. I mean, it is totally his fault, but… code and custom.”
“What are we talking about, Mother?”
“I’m pregnant. And I don’t want to be. And there’s nothing I can do about it. And that man is happy. Happy, content, pleased, whatever word you want to use.”
“Oh. Well, you knew when we came here…”
“There is knowing and there is living through it. Two hundred seventy days of waiting, and then a small burden which will demand all my time. And energy.”
“And meanwhile he doesn’t cut me the slightest slack… code this and custom that. Command where they don’t cover. I sigh with relief every day when he leaves.”
“Oh. Well… it is a barbaric custom, obviously. Or, perhaps, a whole series of them. But you keep telling me to just do my best and be content.”
“Yes, yes, what else can we do? And, really, the frustration is that in so many ways I love my life here. Just the house alone. I have all that time by myself and I wander around… between my deals and all… and just glory in the house, and yard… I sometimes do my work in the park. There’s this stump…”
“So except for this barbaric custom…”
“It would be wonderful. If I didn’t have to watch my tounge and remember code and custom… and command… the whole time he is there. Well, and I have to remember when he isn’t there. If he tells me to wash something or whatever I have to get it done at leat by the time he gets back.”
“I know that!” Jellia said, pretending to rub her backside.
“That is the hardest part,” Mother said. “Watching him physically chastise you.”
“Well, personally, I find getting physically chastised harder than watching others. Especially the kesh-u in my classes who almost seem to have a competiton going on who can get chastised the most. It isn’t like I hardly ever get chastised by anyone nowadays.”
“But,” she put in hastily, “It is barbaric. And the way they parade around with guns. It’s like they aren’t male unless they have a gun on their waist.”
“I had a man over for a meeting the other day and he was armed. I felt nervous the entire time.”
“Well… they are pretty safe with them.”
“Oh, I know theoreticaly. But I can’t wrap my brain around it.”

Contract marriage is an adult dystopia examining the issues of marriage. Like 1984 and Brave New World, Contract Marriage treats the relations between the sexes as a fundamental aspect of how a society is formed and, thus, how a society can go wrong.
Unlike those dystopias, Contract Marriage isn’t all horrible all of the time. The characters for the most part have a good time and get along in their society. But the issues of sexuality, of marriage or not, monogamy or not, faithfulness or not, and gender roles… keep coming up and causing tension and conflict and joy and pain.
My desire is that my readers would be thinking along with my characters about these issues and perhaps even arrive at the same place (minus the flying cars).
